Thank you Andy Payne for being my first student, Peggy Ashworth for telling me to do it (teacher training), Diane Kovanda for being such an amazing teacher of teachers, the other members of the Kind Yoga class of Spring 2011 for their love and support of “the guy,” and everyone else who has touched and supported me along this amazing, unexpected, journey.

One Year Later

It’s hard to believe, but it’s my one year anniversary of being a certified yoga teacher.

In that first year I taught 74 classes to groups ranging from 1 to 20 students. I’ve learned to acknowledge my limitations and work within them, and have discovered some new strengths, too.

I’ve found that when I teach, I am totally immersed in the yoga experience. I’m too busy talking my class through the poses, helping my students, self-checking my form and visualizing the next move, to let my mind wander outside the room or off the present moment.

Much love and thanks to all who helped me along the way!

Online Yoga Video

Students often ask me about DVDs and online video for a home practice.

You may have discovered that there are thousands of books, DVDs, and web sites. YouTube seemed like a good place to look, so I typed yoga into the search box and started viewing.

The good news is that the good videos far outnumber the bad, and the bad news is that there are over 300,000 to choose from.

I applied the Unknown-N solution of The Secretary Problem and came up with the videos by Esther Ekhart.

Esther has a huge fan base (including me), and posts a video or two every week. Her YouTube user name is Yogatic and her videos are here, and her Facebook page is here.

How do you feel after class?

A student once asked me, “Why do I feel so good after a yoga class?”

My answer was along the lines of yoga makes you slow down and think about what you’re doing, makes you conscious of your breathing, and it lengthens and strengthens your muscles. It also generates endorphins which make you feel relaxed and energized.

But, to me, the biggest gain from yoga is experiencing an hour of having your mind and body working consciously together. I once attended a workshop where the presenter told us that the body always lives in the moment, but our minds are nearly always reliving the past or speculating about the future. But, I’ve noticed that when I’m doing yoga, especially teaching it, my mind and body are together. “Where is my foot? Is my elbow straight? Exhale as you lower your arms.”

I think this mind/body synchronization is one of yoga’s biggest benefits and should be a goal in every class. If your mind starts to wander, slow down, breathe, check your alignment, come back to the present and listen to your teacher.

A Lesson on Stress Fractures

A stress fracture is an incomplete fracture of a bone, usually the second or third metatarsal and is caused by unusual or repeated stress — walking, running, maybe downward dog. Typically, there is no moment where you say “Ouch, darn, I just incompletely fractured my second metatarsal!” just an awareness of a minor ache in the ball of the foot. Eventually the ache draws your attention and if that doesn’t, then the swelling will. Treatment is mostly grin and bear it, accompanied by a peculiar off-center gait.

Would anyone like to join me in Yin or Chair Yoga?
